LEE, T. M., J. S. Kuo, AND C. Y. CHAI. Central integrating mechanism of the Besold-Jarisch and baroceptor reflexes. Am. J. Physiol. 222 (3) : 713-720. 1972.-The central integrating mechanism of the Bezold-Jarisch (intracardiac veratrine) and baroceptor (intravenous epinephrine) reflexes was studied in cats under chloralose and urethan. It was found that midcollicular decerebration and lower pontine transection did not affect the reflexes, but electrolysis of the nucleus solitarius abolished both reflexes. Electrolysis of the dorsal midline area only moderately shortened the duration but not the intensity of both reflexes. Electrolysis of the ventral midline area abolished the bradycardia induced by baroceptor reflex. Electrolysis of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus and ambiguus nucleus abolished only the bradycardic effect of both reflexes. Ethybenztropine, 0.1 mg, but not bretylium, 0.6 mg, or INPEA (N-isopropyl-p-nitrophenylethanolamine), 0.9 mg, administered into the fourth cerebroventricle, abolished both reflexes. Data suggest that the above nuclei of the medulla oblongata are important for the integration of the bradycardic effect of the Bezold-Jarisch and baroceptor reflexes, and that the ventral midline area is important for the baroceptor reflex. At least one cholinergic synapse is involved in the integrating mechanism.

The Bezold-Jarisch reflex revisited: clinical implications of inhibitory reflexes originating in the heart.
The concept of depressor reflexes originating in the heart was introduced by von Bezold in 1867 and was later revived by Jarisch. The Bezold-Jarisch reflex originates in cardiac sensory receptors with nonmyelinated vagal afferent pathways. The left ventricle, particularly the inferoposterior wall, is a principal location for these sensory receptors. Stimulation of these inhibitory cardiac recep...
متن کاملRoles of Arterial Baroreceptor Reflex During Bezold-Jarisch Reflex
Among the many cardiopulmonary reflexes, this review specifically examines the roles of the arterial baroreflex during the Bezold-Jarisch reflex (BJR). Activation of cardiopulmonary vagal afferent C-fibers induces hypotension, bradycardia, and apnea, which are known collectively as the BJR; myocardial ischemia and infarction might induce the BJR. Arterial baroreflex has been established as an i...
متن کاملMicroinjection of NMDA antagonist into the NTS of conscious rats blocks the Bezold-Jarisch reflex.
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether or not cardiovagal excitatory and sympatho-inhibitory pathways of the Bezold-Jarisch reflex at the NTS level were mediated by NMDA receptors. The Bezold-Jarisch reflex was activated by intravenous (i.v.) injection of serotonin in conscious rats before and after microinjection of phosphonovaleric acid (AP-5) a selective NMDA antagonist, in...
متن کاملClinical relevance of the Bezold-Jarisch reflex.
THE idea that reflexes originating in the heart can play a role in normal physiology dates to the 1860s. Until the 1950s, these reflexes, and the Bezold–Jarisch reflex (BJR) in particular, were regarded largely as pharmacological curiosities with the only practical application of the study of the BJR being the clinical use of a veratrum alkaloid as an antihypertensive agent. Since the 1860s, it...
متن کاملRestorative effect of atrial natriuretic peptide or chronic neutral endopeptidase inhibition on blunted cardiopulmonary vagal reflexes in aged rats.
Arterial baroreflex function diminishes with age, but whether cardiopulmonary vagal reflexes are similarly altered with physiological aging has not been fully elucidated. In this study, predominantly cardiac high pressure mechanoreceptor-activated (ramp baroreflex) and cardiopulmonary chemoreceptor-activated (von Bezold-Jarisch reflex) vagal reflexes in conscious, instrumented rats were impaire...
